Virtual Gala, Oct. 16 includes an excerpt from new Richard Greenburg Play
Early in the pandemic, Artistic Director David Ivers approached award-winning playwright Richard Greenberg to write a play for our times; the result is A Shot Rang Out—A Play in One Man. Ivers will be featured in an excerpt from this new play as part of SCR’s virtual fundraising gala, Friday, Oct. 16.
Ivers is also part of the silent auction—one of the prizes is a surfing adventure with him, followed by drinks. The evening’s program also includes a Q&A with playwright David Henry Hwang.
Partnering with Berkeley Rep on It Can’t Happen Here—a national radio play
SCR has joined more than 100 theatres across the nation partnering with Berkeley Repertory Theatre’s national radio play, It Can’t Happen Here.
Berkeley Rep’s adaptation of Sinclair Lewis’ 1935 darkly satirical novel was produced in 2016 and has been adapted again as an audio experience (by Tony Taccone and Bennett S. Cohen) with a cast that includes Academy Award-nominee David Strathairn.
The YouTube-cast will be available for listening Oct. 13-Nov. 8, 2020. All partner theatres are encouraging folks to register and to vote.
The first three events of SCR’s new community engagement platform, SCR commUNITY, wrapped up last month with a radio play the theatre commissioned from Juliette Carrillo called Ten Dollar Taco.
Earlier events were an interview with playwright Octavio Solis and scenes from four plays about the heritage and cultural significance of food including masa.
SCR commUNITY is the theatre’s new digital platform dedicated to amplifying the artists and narratives of our region by producing stories inspired by or about the rich diversity of people living in Southern California. Updates on forthcoming events are forthcoming.
SCR will take some shows outside next year—two full productions under the stars—at one of Orange County’s great outdoor venues. Updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
Online Conservatory Acting, Playwriting Classes
SCR’s Theatre Conservatory adapted its classes for kids, teens and adults for virtual learning. Musical Theatre, in particular, thrives with students not just singing, but acting out songs under the watchful ear of instructors Tom Shelton and Erin McNally. Playwright and actor Diana Burbano is helming SCR’s highly popular playwriting class.
Enrollment for winter classes for adults starts the week of November 8, and for kids and teens, the week of December 7.
Kids and teen winter classes run January 12-March 20, 2021, while adult acting and playwriting classes run January 25-March 17, 2021.
